A PROUD HISTORY BY PROUD PEOPLE- YOUR FIRE SERVICE

By David J. Nosal; Fire Chief

The history of Lower Macungie Township is, in of itself, a proud one that spans many, many years.  A part of that history included the creation of an organization that protected the residents within the area against the ravage of fire.  The organization, formed in 1927, was the Wescosville Fire Company.

The Fire Company was comprised of local residents who gave their time, without compensation, when a time of emergency arose.  This fire company was located in the village of Wescosville and it still stands today as a social hall.

In 1974, the fire fighting aspect of the organization found the need for more space.  The need for space was prompted by the necessity of having a greater quantity of fire equipment than could be housed at the Fire Company.  The fire department made the move and a building was erected in close proximity to the social hall.  This new station provided adequate space for more fire trucks and with the assistance of the Lower Macungie Township government, a new 1974 Mack fire truck was purchased.

Since then, the fire department and the Township have maintained a good working relationship.  This commitment to work with one another was solidified in 1982 with the signing of the Fire Protection Agreement, which made the Wescosville Fire Department the ultimate fire protection authority within the Township.

Many things have changed since 1927; but then again many things have not.  In 1999, after years of hard work, the Wescosville Fire Department reorganized and renamed itself the Lower Macungie Fire Department.  That name was chosen because it shows that our services are not just limited to Wescosville, but to the township as a whole.  The Lower Macungie Fire Department still maintains a 100% volunteer roster, as it did from the beginning.  The members of the fire department are township residents who choose to give back to their community on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis and do so without compensation.  The fire department has the equipment to provide assistance with any situation that may arise and our members are highly trained in the various aspects of the fire service.

The Lower Macungie Fire Department is not alone in the commitment to provide fire and other related services to the residents of Lower Macungie Township.  We work closely with our neighboring fire departments, each of which covers their respective pieces of the township.  These fire departments consist of Alburtis, Macungie, Trexlertown and Western Salisbury.  These other fire departments are like ours; they are solely volunteer, highly trained and have the equipment to get the job done.

When you look at the history of Lower Macungie Township, do not forget one of the most important parts, your volunteer fire department.  The fire service is an expensive business with the cost of a new truck reaching $750,000.00 and that is not even including the equipment that needs to go on it!  The Lower Macungie Fire Department will be taking delivery of a new engine in the fall of 2008.  This truck was made possible by the strong support of the township supervisors, the diligent work of both the fire team and ladies auxiliary and of course, you.

Your fire department survives on the generous donations of the township resident, so when you receive a request for financial assistance from the fire department that covers your home, please do not ignore it.  Support those who are out there protecting you.  We will not ignore your call for help, please do not ignore ours.
